Bell Ringing in the Tower

Our eight church bells are rung in three different ways: to tell the time, chiming and full circle ringing.

  • The clock chimes every quarter hour, operated by an electric mechanism.
  • The bells are “chimed” every Sunday for the 8 o’clock service. This is “tune” ringing, where one person strikes all 8 bells using a special apparatus.
  • Full circle ringing is when each bell is rung by a different person. By pulling a rope attached to a wheel, the bell turns and makes the clapper hit the inside.

We ring for  45 minutes before the Parish Eucharist on Sundays and for other special occasions including weddings, baptisms and funerals. Practice night is on Thursday from 7.30 – 9.00pm. We have a “dumb-bell” which  learners use to feel what it’s like to ring a bell, before they progress to the real thing.

Handbell Ringing

The ringers meet on Tuesday evenings to ring light popular music on our 2 octaves of handbells. We entertain many local groups throughout the year, particularly at Christmas.
